To explain GMO is sometimes difficult. What is GMO? Well simply put it is what people are eating in North America. 90% of our foods are in some way connected with a GMO plant or animal.
GMO stands for genetically modified organism. A plant or animal that has been spliced with another plant or animal to benefit from a trait of the other plant. For instance strawberries are spliced with arctic fish to create a berry that can stand the frost. It does not sound good, but even worse these hybrids are being approved at an alarming rate.
Little study has been done, and very few years have passed before these ingredients have been introduced into our food supply. Corporate agendas rule. Fish genes in strawberries, doesn’t sound right and it isn’t right!
Unfortunately, the Canadian and US governments have allowed these foods into our food supply. There are many reasons why this is unacceptable:
• Health concerns including allergy and cancer
• Control of the world food supply
• Environmental pollution due to increased pesticide use
• Arguably lower yields
• No labeling laws to inform the public
HEALTH CONCERNS
Studies performed in England have revealed an alarming rate of pre-cancerous cells in lab Rats fed GMO Foods after only a few day!. It is now widely believed that GMO and cancer are directly related. There are some independent studies to be found online, but be careful not to use the Monsanto or other large corporate funded studies.
If you are not eating Certified Organic foods in North America, chances are you are eating GMO when you consume products containing Soy, Corn, Canola, Cotton and Sugar Beet.
CONTROL OF THE WORLD FOOD SUPPLY
By patenting seeds in the United States, Monsanto; a large corporation has monopolized seed sales in the United States and Canada for Soy and other cash crops. Monsanto own a patent on the seeds for their Round-up Ready GMO Soy.
NON GMO farmers have been found to contain the Monsanto GMO DNA in their soy seeds. This happens due to unstoppable cross pollination by wind and bee.
It has been reported that when Monsanto finds their patented DNA in an independent farmer’s crop, they are sued and burdened with extensive court cases and strong-arming until they are finally either put out of business or forced to convert to Monsanto seed.
Monsanto Soy is resistant to Monsanto’s Round-up Ready pesticide. This allows Monsanto to sell farmers Round-up pesticide to be applied to their soy crop is massive and increasing quantities. The result is that not only is North America’s soy food source GMO, it’s saturated with chemicals that also pollute the soil, and penetrate the ground and end up in our water system.
Is it surprising that Monsanto seed is about four times the price of regular seed?
The US has now approved GMO Alfalfa!! This could contaminate all non GMO Alfalfa by cross pollination and permanently alter the crop on the continent. This also means that all food animals in North America will potentially be contaminated by GMO feed. (feed lot cattle are already fed GMO corn.)
CRISIS IN INDIA
India has been flattened by GMO seed. Their cotton industry has been permanently altered. Farmers who used to feed goats and sheep on cut cotton fields are now advised not to by the Indian government. Too many animals were dying after grazing the cotton fields.
Indian farmers are increasingly unable to afford to buy GMO seed. Farmer suicide has never been higher in India than it is now.
EUROPE
Europe is largely GMO free due to EU legislation instigated by public concern.
